Dallas Public Library System director to retire after two decades of service

Dallas Public Library System Director Mary Jo Giudice will retire Oct. 1 after more than two decades in the library system, Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said Tuesday.
Giudice oversees 28 library branches and has worked in the library system since 2004.
She was the system’s youth services manager and assistant director before becoming director in 2012, during a time of rapid staff turnover and budget cuts. Since then, she has helmed initiatives to tackle homelessness, extend library operating hours and develop the latest library strategic and facilities plan, which envisions a revamped library system by expanding and renovating branches.
“Her dedication and leadership have transformed our [Dallas Public Libraries], aligning it with the City’s priorities around equity and access,” Tolbert said on X.

Giudice received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and a master’s in library science from the University of South Carolina. She spent over a decade working in the travel industry and owned a small business before working for the library system.
Assistant Director Heather Lowe will take over as interim director until a new director is named after a nationwide search.
